Wal-Mart Shutting Down DRM Servers, Abandoning Music Customers

Wal-mart has laudably been moving toward Digital Rights Management (DRM) free music since February 2008, but has announced that in a final transition, they will be shutting down their DRM servers on October 9th.  Wal-Mart is warning customers that after that date, your music can only be used on the original computer it was authorized on, and will be lost if your system dies or you purchase another computer.

Ironically, Wal-Mart advises customers to burn their DRM music to audio CD in order to strip the DRM off of them, a step that the music industry has traditionally derided as a method that only pirates use to attain their stolen booty.
