Reacting to a request for a restraining order from the entertainment industry, a federal judge has ordered RealNetworks to stop distributing their DVD copying software, RealDVD, while the courts take up the case. RealNetworks offers the product as a way for consumers to exercise their right of fair use by copying a DVD to a hard drive without breaking DVD encryption. The movie studios argue the product gives pirates a way to copy a DVD that has been rented instead of purchased.
